BAIDOA — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, alongside a high-level federal delegation, officially arrived today in the city of Baidoa, the interim capital of South West State.
Accelerating Services and Reconciliation
Upon arrival, the presidential delegation was warmly welcomed by the newly appointed Interim Leader of South West State, the Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament, numerous federal and state-level officials, and hundreds of local Baidoa residents.
According to Villa Somalia, the President’s highly anticipated trip to Baidoa is aimed at rapidly accelerating the delivery of essential social services to the local population. The visit serves as a strategic effort to strengthen grassroots peace and reconciliation, consolidate the ongoing democratization process, support vital drought relief initiatives, and firmly advance regional governance.
This presidential deployment directly follows the Prime Minister’s recent decree establishing an interim administration and builds upon the groundwork laid by the initial federal delegation that recently arrived to stabilize the city’s political landscape.
Pushing for Direct Elections
During his stay, President Hassan Sheikh is scheduled to hold a series of critical, closed-door meetings with the interim state leadership, influential Traditional Elders, senior officers of the national armed forces and regional Darwish units, as well as representatives from various sectors of civil society.
These comprehensive discussions will focus heavily on strengthening urban and regional security architectures and ensuring the uninterrupted provision of vital government services to the public during this transitional phase. Most importantly, the President is expected to aggressively push for the regional implementation of the federal “One Person, One Vote” (1P1V) electoral framework, an initiative designed to finally realize the aspirations of the Somali people for long-term peace, democratic stability, and sustainable economic development.
