President Irro Concludes Official Visit to Qatar

Hargesia – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro has concluded an official visit to the State of Qatar, marking a renewed phase in Somaliland’s diplomatic outreach in the Gulf region.

The multi-day visit featured high-level discussions focused on deepening cooperation in trade, infrastructure development, education, and regional security.

President Irro, who assumed office earlier this year after winning presidential elections held late last year, was received by senior Qatari government officials and business leaders. Talks centered on opportunities for Qatari investment in Somaliland’s strategic sectors, including port development, energy, and agriculture. Both sides also exchanged views on enhancing peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

Although Qatar, like most countries, does not formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state, the reception extended to President Irro reflected a growing interest in pragmatic engagement. The Somaliland delegation included several key ministers and advisors, who held parallel sessions with Qatari counterparts and private sector stakeholders.

In a statement issued by the presidency, President Irro described the visit as “fruitful and constructive,” noting that Somaliland is committed to building strong international partnerships that benefit its people and contribute to regional progress.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, and though it remains unrecognized internationally, it has maintained relative peace and democratic governance. The visit to Qatar forms part of President Irro’s broader effort to enhance Somaliland’s global visibility and attract meaningful development cooperation.

President Irro is expected to address the Somaliland Parliament as soon as possible after returning to Hargeisa on Wednesday of this week to report on the outcomes of the trip.
