President Irro’s National Address is A Call for Unity and Lasting Peace in Ceel-Afweyn

In a significant and widely anticipated national address, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro spoke to the people of Somaliland regarding the recent efforts to restore peace and stability in the conflict-prone town of Ceel-Afweyn, located in the Sanaag region. The President’s message came at a critical time following weeks of intercommunal tension that have threatened the fragile cohesion of the region.

President Irro began his address by expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life and property resulting from the clashes, offering condolences to the affected families. He emphasized that peace is a shared national priority and that the government remains fully committed to upholding the rule of law, promoting reconciliation, and ensuring the safety of all citizens.

The President praised the efforts of traditional elders, local leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations who played a constructive role in mediating disputes and fostering dialogue. He acknowledged their grassroots efforts as essential to the conflict-resolution process, noting that peace in Ceel-Afweyn cannot be imposed by force, but must be built through trust, accountability, and inclusive dialogue.

Addressing the underlying causes of the conflict, President Irro pledged to launch a comprehensive development initiative for Ceel-Afweyn and surrounding areas. This initiative will focus on access to education, job creation, equitable distribution of resources, and improved local governance, which he believes are vital to sustaining long-term peace.

The President also called on the Somaliland public to reject tribalism, sectarianism, and incitement, urging media outlets and social media users to act responsibly and promote unity. He warned that any individuals or groups attempting to exploit the situation for political or personal gain would face legal consequences.

In closing, President Irro reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a peaceful, united, and inclusive Somaliland. He appealed to all citizens to support peace efforts, uphold mutual respect, and work together toward national reconciliation.
