President Mohamud Appoints New Mogadishu Mayor

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday appointed Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungab as the new Governor of the Benadir region and Mayor of Mogadishu.

Mungab, a seasoned public servant and former governor of the region, returns to the post amid growing calls for improved governance and enhanced security in the capital.

The appointment comes as part of the President’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local administration and advance development initiatives in Mogadishu.

By virtue of his appointment, Mungab would be replacing Mohamed Ahmed Amiir.

Amiir had assumed office in December 2024, succeeding Yusuf Hussein Jimale, also known as Madale, who served from September 2022 to December 2024.

Mungab previously held the same position from February 2014 until October 2015.

His reappointment marks a return to leadership amid efforts to strengthen local governance and development in the Somali capital.
