President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed the leader of the Wadajir Party the Special Envoy to tackle the ongoing drought in Somalia.
The new Somali leader announced Abdirahman Abdishakur’s appointment on Tuesday, May 24.
Interestingly, Abdishakur had been one of the contestants in the presidential elections held on May 15.
The appointment shows President Mohamud’s willingness to work with leaders across the political divide to find solutions to the country’s problems.
Somalia has been experiencing one of its worst droughts and humanitarian crisis of the last four decades.
Abdishakur, the leader of the opposition Wadajir Party, moves into his new role with immediate effect.
