Mogadishu, Somalia – On Monday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud inaugurated the Third National Conference of Somali Scholars, urging stronger religious leadership in fighting narcotics, enhancing Islamic education, and promoting national unity priorities he described as essential to Somalia’s social stability and nation-building.
The President cautioned that narcotic substances are inflicting serious damage on communities throughout Somalia, underscoring that the government’s drive against traffickers demands complete collaboration from religious scholars.
“Our people are suffering greatly from the impact of narcotics. The government is waging a tough battle against traffickers, and we expect our religious scholars to join this effort with full commitment,” he said.
President Mohamud detailed a government initiative to support Qur’an teachers and bolster religious schools, positioning Islamic education as a key national focus that molds society’s moral foundation.
“My government has a comprehensive plan to improve the welfare of Qur’an teachers and enhance the capacity of religious schools,” he noted.
The President encouraged scholars to heighten public awareness of fundamental Islamic duties, including fasting, prayer, and especially Zakat, which he portrayed as vital for fostering social bonds and mutual aid in Somali communities.
He commended scholars for their steadfast guidance of society and stressed their crucial leadership amid Somalia’s pressing social and security issues.
Nearly 300 scholars from around the world are attending the conference, which is organized by the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.
