On Sunday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia hosted Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the newly elected Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu. This meeting underscored Somalia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its relationship with the AU and enhancing strategic cooperation on continental issues.
Youssouf was making a 2-day official visit to Somalia. He chose Somalia as the first country to visit since winning the AUC chairperson elections held in February this year in Addis Ababa.
Somalia’s dedication to African unity dates back to its role as a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, the predecessor to the current AU Commission. This historical involvement highlights Somalia’s steadfast commitment to continental unity, solidarity, and multilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, President Mohamud expressed his appreciation for Youssouf’s visit and reiterated Somalia’s readiness to collaborate closely with the AU to advance peace, security, and development across Africa. He also acknowledged the significant contributions of the outgoing chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, in promoting the AU’s mission.
Youssouf’s leadership is anticipated to bring renewed vigor to the AU’s efforts in addressing the continent’s challenges and promoting a united and prosperous Africa.
This meeting between President Mohamud and Youssouf signifies a shared vision of strengthening collaboration to address pressing issues and promote peace and prosperity in Somalia and the broader African continent.
