President Mohamud Honors Somalia’s Female Boxing Pioneer

Mogadishu – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday hosted Olympic boxer Ramla Ali at Villa Somalia, recognizing her historic achievements and awarding her an honorary certificate for her contributions to the nation’s sporting legacy.

The President praised Ali for her perseverance and groundbreaking role as the first Somali professional boxer to compete at the Olympic Games and the first to secure an international gold medal in boxing for Somalia. He described her as “a beacon of hope and a source of national pride” who has inspired millions of Somalis at home and abroad.

“Ramla Ali has shown the world the strength, talent, and determination of the Somali people. Her journey reminds us that no challenge is insurmountable when driven by passion and resilience,” President Mohamud said during the ceremony.

Ali’s recognition at the State House comes as part of her return to Somalia, a visit that has stirred nationwide celebrations after decades abroad. Her career, which began after overcoming personal and cultural challenges, has broken barriers for Somali women in sports, placing her among the most influential figures in international boxing.

Expressing her gratitude, Ali said the honor reaffirmed her commitment to uplifting Somalia’s image globally.

“This award is not just for me—it is for every young Somali girl who dreams of stepping into the ring, or pursuing any goal once thought impossible,” she remarked.

The ceremony underscored Somalia’s growing emphasis on sports as a unifying force and a platform for projecting the nation’s resilience and talent to the world.
