President Mohamud Returns to the Frontlines in HirShabelle to Lead Operations Against Al-Shabaab

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud returned to HirShabelle on Tuesday to engage with frontline troops and local militias in the Middle Shabelle region to bolster efforts against the militant group Al-Shabaab. In recent visits, he has met with Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers and Macawisley fighters, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and restoring peace. These visits underscore the administration’s dedication to supporting the armed forces and ensuring lasting security in the region.

In a notable development, Somali forces, in collaboration with local Ma’awisley militia, conducted a significant military operation in the Middle Shabelle region, resulting in the elimination of over 70 Al-Shabaab militants, including senior commanders. This operation is part of a broader national campaign initiated by President Mohamud to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence in central and southern Somalia. The government has been actively encouraging local communities to support these efforts, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the military and civilians in combating terrorism.

President Mohamud has also extended an amnesty offer to Al-Shabaab members willing to defect, assuring them of reintegration into society without fear of punishment. He emphasized that former militants who have left the group are now living with dignity, working within the security forces, government, and private sector. This initiative aims to weaken the militant group by encouraging defections and promoting reconciliation.

These concerted efforts reflect the Somali government’s unwavering resolve to eliminate Al-Shabaab and establish lasting peace and stability in the country.
