President Said Deni Appoints a Leaner Puntland Council of Ministers

President Said Abdullahi Deni of the northeastern state of Puntland has appointed a leaner Council of Ministers.

The oil-rich region has made plans to hold its first ever one-person-one-vote polls in 2023.

For over two decades, Somalia has organized clan-based elections, which have grown increasingly unpopular in a country trying to find its feet after years of war.

On Sunday night, President Deni announced that his Puntland administration would now have 18 cabinet ministers. Previously, his cabinet comprised 20 ministers.

Last January, the mandate of the previous Council of Ministers expired.

President Deni promised that his new administration would embark on restoring security and rebuilding the economy of one of the largest federal states in Somalia.
