Presidential Elections Postponed in Somaliland

Presidential elections have been postponed in the separatist region of Somaliland.

Muse Yusuf, the head of Somaliland’s electoral commission, announced the postponement of the elections on September 24.

Yusuf cited “technical and financial issues” as the reasons that justified postponing the presidential elections.

Somaliland was scheduled to hold presidential polls later this year on November 13.

President Muse Bihi Abdi was elected Somaliland’s leader in 2017 on a five-year term.

According to Yusuf, electoral lists were yet to be drawn up despite the tight timelines involved. He said that it was practically impossible to conclude the exercise on time.

Consequently, the electoral body asked for a 9-month delay from October 1, 2022, to prepare for fresh elections.
