Prime Minister Barre Raises Concern over Oil Deal with Liberty Petroleum

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has raised concerns over the oil deal that the government recently signed with Liberty Petroleum.

The Prime Minister questioned the process that the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources signed with the firm.

In a communique dated March 13, the Prime Minister asks several questions on the deal.

For example, he asks whether the proper channels and procedures were adhered to before penning the deal between the petroleum ministry and Liberty Petroleum.

In his view, Abdirisak Mohamed, the petroleum minister, ought to have taken the deal to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Contracts for approval first.

As per the agreement, Liberty Petroleum now have the legal rights to explore oil in Somalia in three blocks.
