Thousands of children in Somalia’s Puntland and Somaliland regions received critical vaccines last week as part of a major health campaign to strengthen immunity and prevent deadly diseases.
The campaign included vaccinations against polio, measles, and pneumococcal infections—three illnesses that continue to pose a serious threat to children’s health in the region. Health workers, supported by international partners, carried out door-to-door and community-based outreach to ensure wide coverage.
Officials say the campaign is part of Somalia’s broader effort to prevent outbreaks and reduce child mortality. “These vaccines are lifesaving,” said a health ministry spokesperson. “Every child reached is one step closer to a healthier future.”
The effort comes amid ongoing challenges such as displacement, limited access to healthcare, and food insecurity, which make children more vulnerable to preventable diseases.
