Puntland is to fund the construction of a power plant in Bosaso jointly with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The news emerged on Wednesday when representatives of the two governments announced plans to build a 7 Mega Watt peak (7MWp) in the seaport town of Bosaso.
Upon completion, the power plant would increase Somalia’s production of solar power by 100 percent.
Several senior regional officials from Puntland attended the groundbreaking ceremony in Bosaso.
UAE’s funds would be channeled through Abu Dhabi Fund Development (ADfD) while a UAE-based firm known as Smart Gulf Solar is to be the main contractor.
The Minister of Energy, Minerals, and Water, Ahmed Mohamed Yusuf, represented President Said Abdullahi Deni during the ceremony.
Yusuf promised that the construction is to start immediately. He also indicated that the construction would continue to completion.
