The regional state of Puntland believes that the United Nations has to reintroduce the arms embargo against Somalia.
UN lifted the embargo in December 2023 after imposing it for over three decades.
On Thursday, Puntland issued a statement urging UN to reconsider its decision.
Puntland says that the easy access to arms and weapons is behind the increased clashes between different clans in Somalia.
Abdi Farah Said, Puntland’s Minister of Interior, said that Somalia’s weak federal government is incapable of tracking the movement of arms and weapons around the country.
He added that lack of credible institutions worsens the situation.
