Puntland administration, under the leadership of Said Abdullahi Deni, has announced that it is closing all borders to stop the spread of Coronavirus.
World Health Organization (WHO) has classified COVID-19 a global pandemic.
COVID-19 has infected more than 500,000 people globally. It has killed over 24,000 individuals worldwide with the numbers expected to increase rapidly in the coming days and weeks.
In Somalia, three Coronavirus cases have been confirmed. The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has put several measures in place to ensure the pandemic does not spread further.
In a press statement issued late on Friday, Puntland’s Interior Minister announced that it has closed its border with both Ethiopia and Somaliland.
It also banned the importation of Khat, which is extremely popular in the region.
Furthermore, the administration of President Deni asked businesspersons to stop exporting goods to ensure that nothing derails the supply of all essential commodities in the state.
Puntland’s Interior Ministry said that all these directives come into force from March 28, 2020. It expects security forces to enforce them fully.
