In response to the escalating threat posed by Islamic State (IS) militants, Puntland authorities have initiated a strategy to enlist local clans in their counter-terrorism efforts.
This approach recognizes the critical role that community involvement plays in combating extremist groups.
First Deputy Speaker Mohamed Bari Shire has been at the forefront of this initiative, engaging with traditional leaders from villages near the Al-Miskad Mountains.
He emphasized that the fight against IS cannot be won by security forces alone and highlighted the importance of local participation in reclaiming the region from extremist control.
This mobilization of clans is part of a broader counter-terrorism campaign, known as Operation Hillaac, launched by President Said Abdullahi Deni.
The operation aims to eradicate militant hideouts in Puntland’s mountainous terrain and restore stability to the region.
The involvement of local communities is seen as essential in closing intelligence gaps and preventing future attacks, as residents possess valuable knowledge about the terrain and militant activities.
By fostering collaboration between security forces and clans, Puntland aims to strengthen its efforts against IS and enhance regional security.
