Puntland Police Arrest TV Journalist

Omar Mohamed Somane, a TV journalist working for a private TV station in London, has been arrested in Puntland by the local police.

He was arrested on Wednesday in Garowe.

Somane had filed a report covering the dispute pitting Puntland’s Ministry of Education against the Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Education.

The two ministries had disagreed intensely on the unified national examinations.

Puntland has said it will not join other Federal Member States (FMS) in sitting for joint national examinations.

Its refusal forced FSG to prevent Puntland’s secondary school graduates from obtaining their certificates.

A media colleague confirmed Somane’s arrest. The police are holding Somane at the Garowe Central Police Station.

In Somalia, journalists work in stressful conditions. They are prone to frequent arrests and intimidation by authorities. Many of them have also been killed for their reports and stories.
