Puntland Suspends Importation of Khat over the Coronavirus Pandemic

The northeastern state of Puntland has announced its decision to suspend the importation of Khat from Ethiopia to curtail the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

Puntland’s Interior Ministry issued a statement saying that the suspension comes into effect on Saturday March 28, 2020.

The ministry ordered the state’s security forces to enforce the directive.

Additionally, Puntland also announced the closure of all its borders with Ethiopia and Somaliland.

It said the borders would remain closed for several weeks to help the country ensure that Coronavirus cases remain low.

Puntland is yet to confirm how long the ban on importation of Khat would last, though.

The Horn of Africa nation confirmed its third COVID-19 case on Friday, March 27, 2020.
