Puntland to Elect New President on January 8

The regional state of Puntland has set aside January 8 as the day for electing its new President.

Puntland Electoral Commission (PEC) has already made the plans for the elections scheduled across the oil-rich region on Monday.

Sixty-six legislators will meet in Garowe to vote for their preferred candidate.

Outgoing President Said Abdullahi Deni is expected to vie. Those opposing him include Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Guled Salah Barre, and Abshir Omar Jama.

All candidates have promised to prioritize improved security and economic growth.
