Puntland authorities have promised to compensate the family of a teenage girl who was killed by a police officer in the region.
According to authorities, a police officer shot and killed the 15-year old girl in Garowe on December 26, 2020.
On Tuesday, January 5, she was finally laid to rest.
Her family had demanded the arrest and prosecution of the officer who shot and killed her.
However, it seems that authorities have opted not to arrest or prosecute the officer. Instead, they have promised to compensate the girl’s family financially.
In the last nine days, the girl’s family refused to bury her until the government prosecuted the officer.
In Somalia, a practice known as “blood money” is quite common in such circumstances.
Nevertheless, that practice, which involves compensating the family of a person whose loved one was killed, had come under intense scrutiny.
Its opponents argue that it promotes impunity.
