Qatar Envoy Meets with Somali Lower House Speaker

Hasan bin Hamza, the Ambassador of Qatar to Somalia, held a meeting with Mohamed Mursal, the Speaker of the Lower House on Tuesday.

The two leaders talked on several issues but the top item on their agenda was the election crisis bedeviling the country.

The recent announcement by Halima Ismail Ibrahim, the Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) to postpone elections has been the most discussed topic in the Horn of Africa nation.

Qatar remains one of Somalia’s largest financial donors. It has provided funds that the East African country needs for infrastructural development.

Apart from the elections talks, the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties.

While the two leaders met, Somalia’s Upper House (the Senate) continued with its criticisms of Speaker Mursal.

According to Senate, Mursal conspired with President Mohamed Farmaajo and NIEC to postpone the elections scheduled for later this year.

Qatar has not issued any statement on its involvement in the ongoing political crisis in the country, though.
