Doha, Qatar – Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, met on Monday with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro in Doha, in a diplomatic engagement focused on Somalia’s political landscape.
The two leaders discussed the latest developments in Somalia, with a strong emphasis on the importance of promoting national stability and fostering inclusive dialogue among all Somali stakeholders. The meeting comes at a time of heightened regional and international attention on Somalia’s political reconciliation and federal cohesion efforts.
In a statement released by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the meeting, Doha reiterated its “full commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity,” highlighting the vital role of constructive dialogue in shaping the country’s future.
The Qatari government further underscored the importance of peaceful engagement between Somali parties, advocating for a unified approach to resolving longstanding internal disputes.
While Somaliland has sought international recognition since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, Qatar’s statement reinforced its alignment with the prevailing international position, which regards Somalia as a single sovereign state.
President Irro’s visit to Qatar signals ongoing diplomatic outreach by Somaliland’s leadership, even as efforts continue at the regional and international level to encourage political consensus and sustainable peace across Somalia.
