President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor of Somalia’s Galmudug state has endorsed the federal government’s push for a “one person, one vote” election system, underscoring the importance of moving towards a direct democratic process.
Speaking at the opening of the 11th session of Galmudug’s parliament in Dhusamareb on Saturday, he addressed concerns about insecurity and logistical challenges, dismissing them as unfounded.
He also indirectly urged opposition politicians to refrain from spreading what he described as “misinformation” regarding the proposed election framework.
This endorsement signifies support from a key regional leader for the federal government’s electoral reforms, which aim to transition from the current clan-based, indirect voting system to a more inclusive, direct vote model, enhancing democratic participation across Somalia.
