Record Number of Malnourished Somali Children Admitted in Hospitals for Treatment

A record number of malnourished children have been admitted in Somali hospitals for treatment.

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the number of children receiving treatment for their malnourishment is the highest in the last 10 years.

Mohamed M. M. Fall, the UNICEF Regional Director, made this announcement on March 31.

According to Fall, the situation is the same in the three East African neighboring countries of Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

The UNICEF Regional Director said that the record numbers were noted in January 2022.

He attributed the situation to the ongoing drought, which is the worst in the region in the last few decades.

Fall promised increased support by UNICEF towards the government’s response to the situation.
