Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has appointed a ministerial committee to investigate the civilians who were allegedly killed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops.
This followed reports earlier this month that the seven people AMISOM troops killed in Golweyn were not Al-Shabaab militants but innocent civilians.
On August 11, AMISOM said that it had encountered militants who laid an ambush for its troops in the region.
However, local leaders refuted this and said that the dead were not members of Al-Shabaab.
Afterward, AMISOM promised to launch its own investigations into the matter.
On August 21, Prime Minister Roble constituted a committee to look into this incident. He made the announcement shortly after meeting Nathan Mugisha, Uganda’s Ambassador to Somalia.
The Prime Minister called for “punitive action” to be taken against those found guilty of this heinous crime against civilians.
