Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble discussed the ongoing elections impasse with the leader of Gurmad Party on January 7.
Roble’s meeting with Dr. Abdinasir Mohamed, the leader of the opposition Gurmad Party, took place in Mogadishu at the Office of the Prime Minister.
Wednesday’s meeting represents the latest efforts by the Prime Minister to meet various opposition leaders and presidential candidates to solve the impasse.
There is an increasing likelihood of Somalia postponing elections, especially following the move by the Federal Parliament to extend its term until the end of December 2021.
Parliament’s term expired in December 2020.
Consequently, the country was to hold parliamentary elections in December 2020 to usher in a new set of legislators.
Presidential elections were scheduled for February 2021.
A communiqué from the Prime Minister’s office said that he continues seeking to “achieve a common understanding while creating an atmosphere of dialogue.”
The Prime Minister promised to continue meeting presidential candidates who are interested in the upcoming polls.
