The Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has expressed relief at the news that a Somali journalist arrested in Gedo earlier this month is finally free.
RSF expressed delight at the decision to release Mohamud Abdirashid Moallim, a local journalist.
Moallim was arrested on April 1 in Gedo, Jubbaland. Reports from the region indicate that he was detained by officers from the local intelligence agency.
According to RSF, Moallim should never have been arrested in the first place.
They claimed the charges filed against Moallim, which included “suspicious activities”, were nothing more than frivolous.
Earlier, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) had also demanded his immediate release.
NUSOJ added that Moallim’s arrest was a threat to journalistic freedoms.
