Russia Calls for Resumption of Somalia-Somaliland Talks

The Russian government waded into the controversy between Somalia and Somaliland by urging both sides to resume talks.

Vassiliy Nebenzia, the Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, urged Somalia and Somaliland to return to the discussion table to iron out their differences.

Nebenzia said, “We are concerned that the talks between the two sides never progressed as we would have liked.”

Somalia and Somaliland met in August 2020 for talks, which broke down though after more differences emerged between them.

The August talks were organized with the help of President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti.

Nebenzia reminded Somalia and Somaliland of the importance of resuming talks.

The comments by the Permanent Representative to the UN represents the first time Russia delves into the matter.
