Ruto Calls for Assurances on Somalia’s Ability to Take over from ATMIS

Kenya’s President William Ruto has called for assurances from Somalia regarding its ability to take over security-related tasks from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Ruto said this on Monday when addressing the press together with Djibouti’s President Ismail Guelleh.

They were addressing the media during the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Heads of State and Government in Djibouti.

ATMIS is expected to pull 2,000 of its troops from Somalia by June 30, 2023.

The remaining troops would then leave the East African nation by the end of this year.

However, Ruto and Guelleh stated that they would not support such proposals unless the Somali government offers assurances of its ability to tackle Al-Shabaab effectively.
