Saving Lives Against the Odds: Hormuud Salaam Foundation Funds Dialysis for 170+ Somalis at $1M Annual Cost

As kidney disease surges across Somalia, the Hormuud Salaam Foundation has stepped in to provide lifesaving dialysis treatment to over 170 patients—a number that far exceeds its original target of assisting just 10 to 20 individuals.

A Growing Health Crisis

With limited healthcare infrastructure and soaring treatment costs, most Somali kidney failure patients face near-certain death without dialysis. Yet at Daru Salaam Hospital, the Foundation ensures every patient receives full financial coverage—at a staggering cost of $500 to $600 per patient monthly.

A $1 Million Commitment to Survival

This year alone, the Foundation anticipates spending over $1 million to sustain this critical program. Each dollar represents:

✅ A father kept alive for his children

✅ A mother granted more years with her family

✅ A young adult given a second chance at life

Why This Matters

Without this intervention:

❌ Patients would be forced to ration treatments (shortening their lives)

❌ Families would sell assets or fall into debt (deepening poverty)

❌ Somalia’s overburdened health system would collapse further

“We refuse to let financial barriers decide who lives or dies,” says Abdullahi N. Osman, CEO of Hormuud Salaam Foundation. “But as demand grows, we need partners to help us scale this lifeline,” he added.

How You Can Help

The Foundation calls on philanthropists, global health organizations, and the Somali diaspora to join this mission. Around $600 covers a month of dialysis—and a month of hope.
