Second Phase of Baxnaano Project Launched in Mogadishu to Boost Social Welfare

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Jibril Abdirashid Haji, officially launched the second phase of the Baxnaano project in Mogadishu on Saturday, reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable populations across the country.

The Baxnaano project, which is supported by international development partners, aims to strengthen social safety nets and promote economic resilience by providing essential support to low-income households.

The second phase will expand coverage to include more communities affected by conflict, displacement, and climate-related shocks.

Speaking at the launch event, Deputy Prime Minister Jibril emphasized the importance of the initiative in advancing national stability and inclusive development. “The Baxnaano project represents a key pillar in our vision for a more equitable Somalia,” he said.

“This phase will reach more families in need, empower communities, and build a stronger foundation for sustainable growth,” added the Deputy PM.

The program includes direct cash transfers, nutrition support, and livelihood assistance, with a strong focus on women-headed households, persons with disabilities, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Officials from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, international partners, and civil society representatives attended the ceremony, highlighting the broad coalition supporting the project.

The launch comes at a critical time as Somalia works to recover from years of insecurity and climate shocks, with efforts increasingly focused on long-term resilience and poverty reduction.
