The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a resolution seeking to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) to August 31, 2021.
UNSC adopted Resolution 2540 (2020) on Saturday, August 29.
In it, the Security Council said UNSOM’s mandate, as defined in the first paragraph of Resolution 2158 (2014), would now continue for another 12 months.
Further, the Security Council also discussed several issues affecting Somalia.
These included the humanitarian crises bedeviling the East African nation. The council also discussed the latest political developments in the country.
Human rights and security issues were also discussed at length.
Additionally, UNSC condemned the increasing incidences of terror attacks being reported in various parts of the Horn of Africa nation.
