Security Forces Thwart Bomb Plot in Mogadishu, Seize Explosives

MOGADISHU — Security forces in Mogadishu have successfully foiled a suspected bomb plot after intercepting a motorcycle loaded with explosives during a nighttime operation in the Dayniile district, officials confirmed Friday.

The operation, conducted at approximately 23:40 local time, was based on credible intelligence provided by residents, highlighting the critical role of public cooperation in maintaining security, according to a statement from the Somali National News Agency.

Explosives Seized, Suspect Thwarted

Authorities said forces tracked suspicious movements in and around the Dayniile area, leading to the seizure of a motorcycle carrying up to five mortar shells concealed inside sacks disguised as vegetable containers. The explosives were reportedly intended to be transported into the city for use in attacks targeting civilians.

The individual operating the motorcycle attempted to detonate the explosives upon realizing he was about to be apprehended, but security forces acted swiftly to neutralize the threat and prevent the explosion.
Officials confirmed that the explosives and the motorcycle were secured as part of the operation.

Community Cooperation Critical

Security officials in Mogadishu commended the public for their vigilance and cooperation, emphasizing that community support remains vital in preventing attacks and safeguarding the capital.

“The security forces have successfully disrupted a planned attack aimed at undermining stability in the capital,” authorities said. “Public vigilance remains essential in countering threats from groups such as Al-Shabaab.”

The incident comes as Somalia intensifies security operations in Mogadishu and surrounding areas amid ongoing efforts to prevent attacks and maintain stability.

Previous Security Operations Against Al-Shabaab

The foiled plot follows a series of successful operations against Al-Shabaab’s explosives network in recent months. In November 2025, Somali special forces eliminated a high-level Al-Shabaab commander responsible for coordinating bombings throughout the region, with backing from the US Africa Command and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Hassan Siidow Hussein, the senior commander who was neutralized in an overnight raid in Lower Shabelle, had been responsible for coordinating improvised explosive devices (IEDs) aimed at civilians and security personnel. Officials stated at the time that Hussein was tracked through prolonged surveillance before being eliminated along with three armed escorts in the Cumar Beere area.

Ongoing Security Efforts in the Capital

Security forces have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public safety, pledging continued efforts to thwart threats and protect residents from terrorist activities. The Federal Government has been stepping up security measures across Mogadishu as part of broader efforts to prevent attacks and preserve stability in the capital.

Authorities continue to urge residents to report suspicious activities, emphasizing that community partnership remains a cornerstone of effective counterterrorism operations. Security leaders have stated that public vigilance, combined with professional intelligence work, is critical in combating threats from Al-Shabaab and other militant groups operating in the region.

The seized explosives have been secured, and investigations are ongoing, according to officials.
