In response to recent sightings of Al-Shabaab militants, the Somali government has deployed security forces along the road connecting Mogadishu to the agricultural town of Afgooye.
This strategic move aims to secure the vital corridor and prevent militant activities in the area.
Concurrently, Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for an attack on Bariire, a town located approximately 65 km southwest of Mogadishu in the Lower Shabelle region.
The group asserts that its fighters stormed the town early today. As of now, Somali authorities have not issued an official statement regarding this incident.
These developments occur amid ongoing efforts by Somali government forces to counter Al-Shabaab’s presence in the Lower Shabelle region.
In recent months, the Somali National Army (SNA), in collaboration with international partners, has intensified operations to dismantle militant hideouts and reclaim territory.
For instance, in late 2024, the SNA’s 64th Battalion of the 7th Brigade, under the 60th Division, conducted successful offensives targeting multiple Al-Shabaab strongholds in the region, including villages such as Aybuuley, Isgaad, Hoo Hook, Fulaaley, and Baladul Amiin.
Despite these efforts, Al-Shabaab continues to pose a significant threat, as evidenced by their recent activities near Mogadishu and in towns like Bariire.
The group’s resilience underscores the challenges faced by Somali security forces in stabilizing the region and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The situation remains fluid, and further updates from Somali authorities are anticipated as they address these security concerns.
