Senate Speaker Appoints Commissioners to Represent Somaliland in Electoral Bodies

Abdi Hashi, the Speaker of Somalia’s Upper House, has appointed commissioners to represent Somaliland in the electoral bodies.

Speaker Hashi appointed the commissioners on Thursday, November 5.

Somaliland would now have two commissioners in the Federal Election Commission and a similar number joining the Disputes Resolution Commission.

September’s National Consultative Conference agreed to form federal electoral bodies instead of relying on the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) to facilitate the elections.

Earlier this week, Speaker Hashi also disputed the decision by the Federal Government of Somalia to control the list of commissioners for Somaliland.

Somaliland should have appointed its members like the other Federal Member States (FMS).

However, the breakaway region has refused to do so citing its independence and sovereignty as a nation with autonomous institutions.
