Senior Police Commander Quits over the Unclear Release of Al-Shabaab Militants from Custody

Major Burham Ahmed, a senior police commander in Dhusamareb has quit over the decision by some of his colleagues to release Al-Shabaab militants who were in custody.

His decision to quit, which was announced on Friday, has given credence to reports that have circulated for the past month of an unholy alliance between the government and Al-Shabaab.

While announcing his unprecedented move to quit the service, Maj. Ahmed stopped short of naming the officers who were responsible for releasing the extremists.

He said the officers in question undermined his efforts and those of junior officers working under him to maintain law and order by vanquishing the terror group from the region.

For almost two decades, the Al-Qaeda linked group has brought terror, impunity, and suffering to Somalis in different parts of the country.

It has also carried out attacks in various countries in the Horn of Africa region. Lately, though, the group has been making a comeback in Somalia.

The African Union and United States have sent troops to the region under AMISOM and AFRICOM to ensure that Al-Shabaab is defeated in Somalia.

Last month, a few Kenyan newspapers published reports accusing the Federal Government of Somalia of colluding with the militia. Government officials denied the report.

Under Maj. Ahmed, Dhusamareb has seen a huge improvement in security.
