Senior Puntland Politicians Call for Postponement of May 25 Elections

Senior politicians from Puntland have called for the postponement of the elections that are due on Thursday, May 25.

Led by Mohamed Abdirizak, they urged authorities to call off the polls.

The Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) has finalized plans for the local government elections (LGEs) due next week.

TPEC has urged all registered voters to pick their voting cards before the due date.

However, a battery of former regional and federal politicians now want the polls called off until all stakeholders reach an understanding of constitutional changes.

There are fears that President Said Abdullahi Deni wants to change the constitution to extend his term.

Politicians also urged security forces from the region to cease taking political sides. Instead, security agencies must be nonpartisan.
