Residents of Mogadishu were left in shock after soldiers from the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) blocked roads in the capital to protest unpaid salaries.
The soldiers, who were not afraid to speak to the media, cited the reason for their strike as lack of salaries for the last three months.
In Somalia, it is normal for the Federal Government of Somalia to channel soldiers’ salaries to political campaigns.
Currently, the country is in the middle of the electioneering period with elections scheduled to take place late this year and early next year.
However, unpaid salaries could become a huge problem considering that Al-Shabaab has also increased its attacks around the country.
