Shock in Somalia as Al-Shabaab Target President Mohamud’s Convoy in Bold Assassination Attempt

On March 18, 2025, a roadside bomb exploded near Somalia’s presidential palace in Mogadishu, targeting President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy.

The President was en route to the main airport to oversee military operations against Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region.

Despite the attack, President Mohamud was unharmed and continued his journey.

Witnesses reported seeing at least three bodies at the scene, indicating civilian casualties.

The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which has been labelled a “cowardly act of desperation.”

This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Somalia, even as government forces, supported by African Union peacekeepers, intensify operations against Al-Shabaab.
