Sixteen People Die in Somalia Floods

On Wednesday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that 16 people had been killed in the raging floods in Somalia.

A combination of riverine floods and torrential rains that began in April-June at the onset of the Gu or rainy season in the country is responsible for all the deaths.

Intense flooding started a month ago all over the country.

Further, OCHA stated that the floods have affected more than 200,000 people in various parts of the Horn of Africa nation.

Ten more people are considered missing, as per the statistics that OCHA has too.

Similarly, close to 2,000 farms are submerged, which creates food problems considering that Somali farmers typically harvest their crops between April and May.

OCHA issued a report detailing the impact the floods are likely to have in the country. In the report, it says waterborne diseases are likely to increase as the heavy downpours continue.

Moreover, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), announced that the flooding will continue until mid-May.
