Sixty-Seven Percent of Somalis Receiving Money from the Diaspora are Unemployed

Sixty-seven percent of Somalis in the East African nation who receive money from the diaspora are unemployed.

A study by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2021 discovered this fact.

Dahabshil, one of the biggest money transfer companies in Somalia, said in its report on August 30 that Somalis in the diaspora are key to the growth of the economy.

According to Dahabshil, remittances from Somalis in the diaspora are a lifeline to many in the East African nation.

Many Somalis in the country are unable to earn sustainable income at the moment.

Essentially, that is because of several factors. These include the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing drought, and a recent locust invasion.

Each year, members of the diaspora community send approximately US$1.3 billion to Somalia.
