SJS Condemns Continued Detention of a Journalist in Puntland

Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) strongly condemned the continued detention of a journalist in Puntland.

Authorities in the semiautonomous region have kept Kilwe Adan in detention since December 27, 2020 when he was arrested in Garowe.

Adan was arrested together with other journalists – Farah Mohamed Khalif and Mahad Ahmed Alasow – who have since been released.

Alasow and Khalif were arrested in Jowhar and Garowe respectively.

However, Alasow and Khalif were set free while Adan remained in the custody of the local security agents.

SJS released a statement calling for the immediate release of Adan from detention.

Furthermore, in their statement, SJS said that Adan has been kept away from any form of contact at an undisclosed location.

Adan is a freelance journalist who works under Kilwe Media Inc., which mostly reports Puntland-related news via Facebook.

He was reportedly arrested with Alasow and Khalif over a report they filed on the December 26 protests in Puntland. Those protests were over the high inflation rates.
