Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) held protests over the continued detention of a journalist in Puntland.
Kilwe Adan Farah has been in detention since his arrest early this year.
He was arrested in Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland, after reporting about the ongoing protests in the region over the worsening inflation.
The local currency, Somali Shilling (SOS), has experienced a free-fall over the last 2-3 months thus causing inflation.
Abdalla Ahmed Mumin, the Secretary General of SJS, spoke during the Saturday protests.
In his address, Secretary General Mumin termed Farah’s arrest and continued detention an “illegality.”
According to Mumin, it is illegal for the government to arrest and detain a person for 21 days.
He spoke out against the government’s decision to keep Farah away from his lawyer and family.
Furthermore, the SJS Secretary General said that the organization heard of the torture, torment, and threats that Farah continues to face from the government.
