SNA and AUSSOM Dismantle Al-Shabaab Checkpoint Near Janaale

Busleey, Lower Shabelle – In a decisive move against terrorism and civilian extortion, the Somali National Army (SNA), in coordination with the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), conducted a successful joint operation today targeting Al-Shabaab militants in Busleey village, located on the outskirts of Janaale town in the Lower Shabelle region.

The operation led to the complete dismantling of an illegal checkpoint established by Al-Shabaab fighters. This checkpoint had been a critical tool for the group’s criminal activities, used to extort money from civilians, impose illegal taxes, disrupt local trade, and severely restrict the free movement of residents in the area.

According to security officials, the checkpoint’s removal marks a significant step forward in restoring public safety and economic normalcy in Lower Shabelle. Residents have long suffered under the oppressive practices of the militant group, which has used such checkpoints to assert control over strategic routes and instill fear among local populations.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that this mission is part of a broader, sustained campaign to liberate areas under terrorist control and re-establish the authority of the federal government. It aligns with the national security strategy to degrade Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and restore governance in liberated areas.

“The Somali National Army and our AUSSOM partners remain committed to protecting civilians and reclaiming every inch of Somalia from the grip of terror,” a spokesperson from the defense ministry said following the operation.

Military officials did not release casualty figures but confirmed that intelligence gathering is ongoing to ensure that militants fleeing the area do not regroup elsewhere.

Today’s operation underscores Somalia’s renewed momentum in the fight against violent extremism and demonstrates the growing effectiveness of joint military operations in restoring peace and security across the country.
