Hiiraan, Somalia – The Somali National Army (SNA), in collaboration with local Macawisley forces, launched a coordinated military operation targeting Al-Shabaab militants in the Hiiraan region today.
According to military officials, the operation focused on flushing out Al-Shabaab elements believed to be hiding in villages and remote areas along key routes used by the terror group for movement and supply. The offensive was conducted in areas between the towns of Maxaas and Mataban, which have witnessed a resurgence of militant activity in recent weeks.
Local sources reported hearing heavy gunfire as the joint forces advanced through suspected Al-Shabaab hideouts. Military officials say several militants were either killed or captured, while others fled the area. Weapons caches and explosive devices were also seized during the operation.
“This mission is part of our wider strategy to deny Al-Shabaab any safe haven in Hiiraan and disrupt their capacity to launch attacks against civilians and our forces,” said one senior SNA officer involved in the operation.
The Macawisley, a community-based militia group aligned with the federal government, have played a crucial role in supporting state and national forces in the ongoing war against Al-Shabaab in central Somalia. Their familiarity with local terrain and strong community backing have made them instrumental in reclaiming territory previously under militant control.
Residents in the region welcomed the operation, expressing hope for long-term peace and security. However, some have also called for increased protection to prevent retaliatory attacks by the insurgents.
The government continues to prioritize military pressure on Al-Shabaab, especially in central parts of Somalia such as Hiiraan and Galgaduud, as part of the second phase of its national offensive launched last year. Despite recent setbacks and deadly attacks by the group, Somali authorities have vowed to sustain momentum until full territorial recovery is achieved.
Security officials confirmed that the operation is still ongoing, with additional sweeps planned in neighboring areas in the coming days.
