Somali National Army (SNA) forces killed a senior Al-Shabaab intelligence officer during a military operation carried out on Wednesday.
The SNA unit that carried out the successful operation was the US-trained Danab Forces.
Multiple sources confirmed that the operation on September 30 was the latest by SNA since March this year.
SNA has upped its operations against members of the militia group.
It has been working closely with African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and US Africa Command (AFRICOM) troops to defeat Al-Shabaab.
Large swathes of southern and central Somalia, especially the rural areas, remain under the control of the Al-Qaeda linked group.
This week’s attack against Al-Shabaab led to the death of Abdulaziz Awoowe.
The militant has been leading Amniyat, a deadly Al-Shabaab wing. He also doubles as an expert in making explosives, especially Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
According to sources, Al-Shabaab carried out a covert mission in Leego, a town under the control of Al-Shabaab where Awoowe has lived.
He was spotted and killed after months of surveillance by security agents in the region.
