The Somali Congress of Trade Union (SOCOTU) has strongly condemned the arrest and subsequent detention of the Editor of Goobjoog Media Group (GMG) Abdiaziz Ahmed Gurbiye.
SOCOTU also termed the arrest “unreasonable” and went further to demand the immediate release of GMG’s Editor too.
President Mohamed Farmaajo’s administration issued an order for the arrest of Gurbiye, which happened on April 14, 2020.
According to authorities, Gurbiye is under investigation for a post he published on Facebook stating that the Office of the President took hold of a ventilator donated to Martini Hospital.
SOCOTU said, “Gurbiye’s statement does not warrant the arrest and detention that have followed. We strongly condemn the growing intimidation of journalists in the country.”
SOCOTU joins FESOJ, other professional organizations, political leaders, and fellow Somalis that have condemned the government’s treatment of Gurbiye.
