SoDMA Appoints New Director for Disaster Risk Management Fund

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has announced the appointment of Abdullahi Mahamud Diriye as the new Director of the National Disaster Risk Management Fund, a body tasked with coordinating resources to prepare for and respond to emergencies across the country.

The announcement was made by SoDMA Commissioner Mohamud Moalim, who underscored the importance of the Fund in strengthening Somalia’s resilience to recurrent shocks such as drought, floods, and displacement crises. Moalim urged Diriye to carry out his responsibilities with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

“This Fund is central to supporting vulnerable communities and ensuring timely interventions. I call upon the new director to serve the Somali people with dedication and honesty,” Moalim said, while offering prayers for his success.

Diriye’s appointment comes at a critical moment, as Somalia continues to face the combined impact of climate shocks, conflict-related displacement, and humanitarian needs affecting millions of people. The Fund is expected to play a vital role in mobilizing resources, improving coordination with international partners, and ensuring effective disaster preparedness.

Observers note that Diriye’s leadership will be pivotal in building trust and enhancing the Fund’s efficiency, particularly as Somalia works toward long-term resilience and self-reliance in disaster risk management.
