SoDMA Calls for Stronger  Cooperation with Norway on Humanitarian and Development Priorities

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia and the Kingdom of Norway have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation in humanitarian response and sustainable development.

On Monday, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim held a meeting with Ms. Merete Dyrud, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Somalia. The discussions centered on ways to enhance joint efforts in addressing urgent humanitarian needs while supporting long-term development for Somali society.

Commissioner Moallim underlined Somalia’s ongoing challenges, including recurring droughts, floods, displacement, and the devastating impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. He emphasized that partnerships with countries like Norway are critical in mobilizing resources and expertise to mitigate these challenges.

Ms. Dyrud reiterated Norway’s continued support for Somalia’s humanitarian agenda, noting that her country remains a reliable partner in promoting resilience and stability. She highlighted Norway’s interest in backing community-driven projects that align with Somalia’s national development priorities and build stronger institutions capable of delivering essential services.

The meeting also explored avenues for collaboration on disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and strengthening Somalia’s capacity to respond effectively to emergencies. Both sides expressed optimism that improved coordination would ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those most in need while laying the foundation for recovery and sustainable growth.

Norway has long been a key partner for Somalia, contributing to humanitarian aid, peacebuilding initiatives, and development programs. Monday’s engagement reaffirmed the two nations’ shared vision of supporting Somalia’s transition toward stability and self-reliance.
